Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate® Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students at Scotch in Years 6 to 10, focuses on the development of the whole child in the classroom and also the world outside. It offers a framework that meets children's needs: academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural.

Is a programme of international education designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world.

The following video gives an insight into the philosophy of the programme.

The MYP at Scotch

The MYP cultivates a holistic approach to education in a modern world, equipping the student with the theoretical and practical skills to overcome the many hurdles of today's interdependent relationships.

The MYP curriculum offers students the opportunity to engage a nucleus of eight core disciplines.

Students study subjects from each of the eight subject groups through the five Areas of Interaction: approaches to learning, community and service, human ingenuity, environment, and health and social education.

These interactive areas are common to all disciplines with each subject developing general and specific aspects of the areas. In this way, the subject groups are also linked by the areas of interaction, demonstrating the interdisciplinary potential of the MYP. The five areas of interaction have no clear boundaries, but merge to form a context for learning that contributes to the student's experience of the curriculum.

The Personal Project

An important component of the Year 9 programme is the Personal Project. The Personal Project is an inquiry on a topic of personal choice completed over an extended period of time. Through the project, the boys become proficient in planning and developing a line of thought, collecting information, choosing relevant approaches and techniques, analysing and reviewing. The project is completed in the boys' own time, outside normal school hours, requiring organisation, self-discipline and personal effort.

Over a 12 month period between Years 9 and 10, each boy has a supervisor who acts as a guide and mentor. This important relationship over the early adolescent stage of development has enriched the learning programme at Scotch College. The Personal Project Showcase in September of Year 10 is a celebration of the academic growth that the boys have achieved at the end of their Middle Schooling.
